Service

ISSETA members build the best lifesaving equipment in the world, but it’s equally important that the equipment is properly serviced during the annual inspection. To ensure this, ISSETA members have established extensive service networks across the globe, ensuring customers can have their equipment serviced correctly.

Why Must Liferafts Only Be Inspected by an Approved Service Station?

Firstly, this is a mandatory requirement of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Secondly, approved service stations have personnel who receive regular training from the manufacturers. These stations also have access to the latest service manuals and genuine spare parts. Their premises are frequently inspected and approved by both local maritime authorities - that is a requirement of IMO - and the manufacturers.

Liferafts inspected by non-approved service stations are at risk of malfunction, which could lead to the loss of lives. Moreover, vessels that cannot prove their liferafts have been serviced by an approved station may face detention during port state control inspections.

What is Included in an Annual Inspection?

The following video provides an overview of what’s involved in an annual inspection:

How Can You Check if Your Liferafts Have Been Properly Serviced?

  • Ensure the inflatable liferafts have been serviced at an approved station.
  • Confirm that the service station maintains current manufacturer accreditation.
  • Verify that the service technicians are trained and certified for the specific make and model of the liferafts.
  • Make sure the proper parts and calibrated tools were used during servicing.
  • Check that the service certificate is genuine, and not a fake.

ISSETA also strongly recommend that, if time permits, the ship sends a crew member or representative to witness the service. Although it may not be possible to observe the entire process, attending the service can give valuable insight into the quality of the work being done.
